A Prayer for Courage

Blessed Spirit of Our Lives: There are times when we have no choice—circumstances change and we must change too.

This is how life works. We settle into patterns. We settle into routines. We settle into habits. We move along with the seasons. We work towards the goals we’ve set for ourselves. We are more or less happy, more or less content.

Until the day things change. A new way of being in the world beckons to us, and whether we feel ready or not, we need to follow its call.

Sometimes we welcome it. We’ve been waiting for it, longing for it: the arrival of a new opportunity, the birth of a child or grandchild, falling in love, a marriage proposal, a new job—a good job. And sometimes, we know, change comes with pain. That list is long: the diagnosis of an illness, the death of a loved-one, the loss of work, a move, a divorce, the recognition that something about ourselves—how we view the world, what we regard as true, who we love—does not quite fit the social norms. The path before us is no easy path. Blessed Spirit of Our Lives: In all such moments may we find in ourselves the sources of courage, commitment, strength and resolve to pursue a new path.

At times we recognize a challenge much larger than the particularities of our own, small lives. We peer through the veil that once shielded our knowing. We encounter injustice we didn’t know was present. We encounter inequality we didn’t know was present. We encounter exclusion, violence, poverty and hatred we didn’t know was present. Such moments of recognition confront us with a simple question: will we remain silent or will we speak up? Will we continue with the patterns of our lives—the routines the habits—or will we stand—stand with our words, with our hearts, with our bodies, with our deeds, with our love and even with our lives—to help create a more just, loving and peaceful society?

Blessed Spirit of our Lives, in such moments when we feel called to work for a more just, loving and peaceful society, when we feel called to stand on the side of love, may we find in ourselves the sources of courage, commitment, strength and resolve to respond well to the call.

Amen and blessed be.
