Let Sujitno Stay!

We had a great turnout from UUS:E and from the larger community at our Valentines Day press conference in support of Sujitno Sajuti. For background on Sujitno’s immigration situation, check out the Let Sujitno Stay website. The video of my statement to the press is here:

You can also see Channel 3′s coverage of the press conference here.

It is true Sujitno’s immigration status is out of compliance with federal regulations. But he is not a criminal. He is not a terrorist. He is a peaceful and loving man who has lived in the United States (originally at the invitation of the US government) for 23 years. He has been asking the government for 8 years to have his case reconsidered. For 8 years the government has essentially ignored him. I understand that under the Obama Administration’s standards, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has the authority to grant a stay of deportation. Let us hope that they finally hear Sujitno’s appeal. Let us hope that they hear our cries for compassion and justice. There is no need to tear this man away from his wife. There is no need to tear this man away from his students. There is no need to tear this man away from the community he has called home for decades. No need. No reason. No justification. Let Sujitno stay!
